Skills Audit

We have created a skills audit that we think will help us accomplish the task and put our skillls together to make the film trailer the best it can be. By using this skills audit we can determine who is more confident with certain skills than others aswell as teaching each other some new techniques. Working together in this way can speed up our process and we can use all of our skills and each apply it within the creation of our trailer.

What is a teaser trailer?

Teaser Trailers

Teaser trailers are typically adverts that consist of cuts and cryptic scenes that give the viewer a small amount of information about the upcoming film which will leave them imagining and creating the rest of the story line for themselves. The small message that is revealed within the teaser trailer can sometimes include parts of the film that have been cut out as a teaser trailer can be released months prior to the release of the actual film, which would mean that the film may not have even been finished before the trailer is released. A teaser trailers main purpose is less to reveal the movie content to the audience and rather make the audience a hype and excitement for a new film coming up in the future. The main conventions that make teaser trailers so exciting and enthralling lies on a number of factors. These are the timing of the cuts, a thrilling suspense can be created and this is often one of the things that hook the viewer into watching the film. The music also plays a big part in the success of a teaser trailer. Music sets the scene and plays with human emotions. If the music has a negative tone or an eerie suspense it can really effect the viewer and set the mood for the trailer. Teaser trailers are created in a method that will entice the viewer into watching the film.

Film Questionnaire

Here is the questionnaire we have created to discover more about what attracts our audiences to watch films. We asked 9 questions to a range of different ages and genders to try and narrow down what would be the best idea. Below are two links. The first is a print screen of our questionnaire that we have created and handed around. The second is the pie charts and percentages that were created on slideshare using the results of the film questionnaire.

Further research

My classmate and I decided to create a mind map under the title of our brief. We decided on the brief 'A promotion package for a new film, to include a trailer, together with two of the three options'
  • A website homepage for the film
  • A film magazine front cover
  • A poster for the film
Out of the three options we decided upon creating a film magazine front cover and a poster for the film.

Here is an image of the mind map that we created as a draft of ideas. After finalising and deciding upon what brief we wanted to undertake we sub-sectioned it into three categories of ideas to try and narrow down to the idea we would use to base our trailer upon. These three categories are genres, audience and locations. These are just basic ideas we will think of until we create a questionnaire which would be more helpful as that way we can see what would be more appealing to the audience.

Research

Throughout the course of this term I have carried out some research to try and gather ideas as to what to do for my A2. As a basic research I decided to go into other A2 students blogs in my school as well as up and down the country to try and investigate into what A2 media studies requires. I watched their film trailers and looked at all the different varities of film genres and camera angles they used to gain a successful Media Product. Once I had a idea of what it required I got given a brief and had a look at the different ranges of questions that I could study at A2 and came to a decision on which brief really stood out to me, and appealed the most. Once I had chosen my brief, I then went on to create a mind map based around the question I chose, discussing a wide range of genres, products and other items that were needed for my film, in order for me to narrow them down and decide on one idea

Task Brief

Working with my classmates, we have decided upon this brief.

'A promotion package for a new film to include a trailer together with two of the three options:

  • A website home page for the film
  • A film magazine front cover
  • A poster for the film '
From this selection we came to the conclusion that we felt would best suit us and that we are the most skilled in. We decided upon a film magazine front cover and a poster for the film as these two were the most appealing to us. We then went on to create a skills audit for each of us so that we could use our skills and knowledge in this field to our best and in the end create a good trailer.
